Everything You Need to Know about Traveling with THC

With changing local and federal cannabis regulations across the country, it’s hard to keep track of what types of products you might be able to find in different states or areas, and equally nerve wracking to try and bring your faves to new places.

That’s why we’re here to help you simplify your approach and let go of travel anxieties. Keep reading to learn which cannabis products you can travel with in the United States, how to pack THC for TSA, and how to get your head into the clouds before take-off.

Can I bring THC on a plane?

Products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the FDA are federally legal throughout the United States for consumers ages 21 and up. This means that these same products are approved for domestic travel by TSA. (Good news: this includes all of Gigli’s products!)

But don’t just take our word for it! See what TSA says about travelling with THC-infused products on their website.

Of course, the standard TSA rules still apply. You cannot check e-smoking or vaping products in a checked bag due to lithium battery restrictions, but you can bring them in a carry-on, assuming any cartridges included meet that legal 0.3% or less THC status.

On the flip side, any oils, gels, drinks, or other liquid products over 3oz will have to be packed in a checked bag, as they’re over the TSA limit for any type of liquid. Gigli variety packs have been tried and tested to travel in checked luggage, with nothing but success!

Do I have to prepare anything special to travel with approved THC products?

Nope! If you’re traveling with approved products, all you have to do is pack them neatly in their original packaging.

TSA staff are most likely not specifically trained to differentiate a legal THC product from an illegal one, so it’s important to make sure you’re bringing products that are clearly labelled as hemp, with less than 0.3% THC, and complying with other legal labelling requirements. No casual plastic bags or containers from home here! If you’re worried about spilling or contamination from anything else in your bag, put the product packaging inside a container or bag.

Can I consume THC before my flight?

Let’s be honest, the pre-flight edible is the new pre-flight glass of champagne! Taking an edible before a flight is ideal, because of the delayed activation time. Everyone’s tolerance and preferences are different, but we suggest getting through security and being fully prepped at your gate before popping a 5mg chocolate with your gate snack. Expect the relaxation to kick in and your stress to melt away about 45 minutes to 1 hour later, hopefully after boarding and take-off.

Whether you want to take the edge off, have a little extra fun with your travel companions, or have the best plane nap of your life, practice a dosage you’re experienced and comfortable with. And be prepared with extra mid-flight munchies and hydration, of course!
